Joy Sumilang

Joy Sumilang

Joy Sumilang, who claimed to be the daughter of former matinee idol Romeo Vazquez, was born in 1964. She was a rebellious teenager who left home at the age of 15, finding work as a sexy model/dancer at popular Manila girlie bars like Cafferino’s and Thunderdome. At the age of 21 she was discovered by reporter and eventual manager Roland Lerum in a gay bar in Quezon City. She appeared in her first bold movie, the aptly named Bold Star, in 1986. Joy was one of the most daring actresses of the 80’s era, appearing in many “Pene” scenes in which she engaged in actual sex on camera. Of course, what was shown in theaters was much tamer-

-than what was actually filmed and later released on DVD:

She starred in movies for 10 years, then left the business for good in 1996, traveling to Singapore, Dubai and the UK, and taking jobs as varied as cleaner, caregiver, nanny and food server in order to support her two children. In 2006 GMA Network aired a docudrama about her life entitled Magpakailanman: Sa Muling Pagbangon – The Joy Sumilang Story. The drama depicted Joy’s as “a bold star who has experienced every setback in life, which has taught her everything she needs to know to be strong, especially for her family.” Actress Tanya Garcia portrayed Joy. In 2024 Joy appeared on a “Timeless Beauty” episode of Family Feud Philippines, along with 80’s Pene actresses Amanda Amores and Myra Manibog. That same year, Julius Babao interviewed Joy for his YouTube channel. In the hour-long interview, Ang buhay ngayon ng 80’s Sexy Star Joy Sumilang, Joy discussed her past struggles, previous abusive relationships, and her commitment to her children.

Cristina Crisol

Cristina Crisol

The daughter of a retired US Navy serviceman and a Puerto Rican/Filipina mother, Cristina (Jean Elizabeth May in real life) always dreamed of being a movie star while she was growing up in Olongapo. When one of her friends told her about a film scout, she applied immediately. Upon seeing her striking beauty, the talent scout asked her to be a bold star in the movies, an offer she quickly accepted.

Her fame was brief, and after appearing in about 10 or 12 movies, among them Kikirut-Kirot, Uhaw na Uhaw, Di mahilom ang Sugat and Paraisong Gubat, she fell in love and turned her back on what was then a very good career. Cristina became a sexy dancer after leaving acting. As a star attraction at Manila gentleman’s clubs, she at one point earned over P10,000 a night in pay and tips.

In recent years, Cristina has occasionally engaged with media. In 2008 she appeared on GMA’s TV program Wish Ko Lang, where she talked about the financial struggles of raising her children, and her desire for renewed opportunities in show business. In 2023 she was interviewed by journalist Julius Babao for his “Unplugged” series, where she reflected on her career and discussed her life post-acting. In 2024, she made a nostalgic guest appearance as part of Team Gandang ’80s on ABS-CBN’s Family Feud Philippines in an episode titled Hotties of the 80s. Her appearance on the show highlighted her enduring recognition among Filipino audiences, even though it had been decades since her stardom. Cristina has four children from different relationships and lives a simple life in Masantol, Pampanga with her husband, a construction worker, and two kids. She has no regrets about her life as a sexy star except not saving more money and not finishing her studies.

Coca Nicolas

Coca Nicolas

Coca was born on November 7, 1966 in Olongapo City. Her birthname was Johnnalee Hickins, but after talent manager Rey dela Cruz discovered her, she famously became known as Coca Nicolas, one of the “Softdrink Beauties” (along with Sarsi Emmanuelle and Pepsi Paloma). She starred in a string of hit films and enjoyed a lavish lifestyle as a bankable actress, with films such as Snake Sisters (1984), Naked Island (1984) and Kalapating Musmos (1985).

Excessive vice lead to her addiction to the drug Mogadon. When the Bold Era passed, her film career deteriorated. She took work as an entertainer in Japan, where she turned to alcohol abuse and heavy smoking, later suffering from lung disease as a result. By the time she returned to the Philippines, she had squandered her savings. Her financial struggles were compounded when she lost her Pampanga house during the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in 1991. Coca began selling ice and ice candy to earn a living.

Since overcoming her vices, Coca has appeared on several YouTube programs. The 2015 GMA News program Sexy Star Coca Nicolas’ Homecoming – Tunay Na Buhay has over one million views. In 2024, Coca opened up about her former housemate and friend, Pepsi Paloma, in an interview on Julius Babao’s Unplugged channel. In the interview, which has over two million views, Coca maintained that Pepsi’s rape allegations were fabricated by their manager Rey dela Cruz for publicity. In 2025, Unplugged featured Coca in I’ll Be Home For Coca, a reunion of Coca and fellow 80’s bold stars Sarsi Emmanuelle and Myra Manibog.

Now a devoted mother to her children, Coca said she regrets not putting aside money for her future during her glory days as a bold star.

Anna Marie Gutierrez

Anna Marie Gutierrez

Born in 1964, Anna Marie began her acting career at the age of fifteen in the family comedy movie Dolphy’s Angels (1980). Over the next three years, she appeared in over twenty films. Her signature short hair and cute, girl-next-door looks made her a standout.

When she was 18, she began to star in mature movies such as Harot and Dagta. Her comely face was matched by a slender, beautiful body and gravity defying breasts.

It was the bold film Scorpio Nights in 1985 that catapulted her to full stardom. Considered by many to be a classic of Philippine cinema, and perhaps the most erotic of all the 80’s Bold era films, Scorpio Nights was first released uncut in a limited run at the Manila Film Center in 1985, where it shocked viewers. Although its wide theatrical release was censored, the uncut version was later released on DVD.  Anna Marie went on to star in numerous other bold films such as Takaw Tukso, Climax, Unfaithful Wife, and Di Mahilom ang Sugat. She stopped acting in 1988 with over 40 films to her credit. She won the Gawad Urian best actress award for the film Takaw Tukso and PMPC Star Awards for Movies in Unfaithful Wife and Hubad na Pangarap. Her impact on Philippines bold movies will never be forgotten.

Rumor has it that she married a wealthy businessman before relocating to the United States in 1988. She took a job as an office manager for a surgical doctor in a New York hospital. In 2019, paranormal expert Jaime Licauco claimed in a Philippine Daily Inquirer news article that Anna Marie had died. This was later debunked as fake news when she was interviewed by PEP.ph in 2020. She now lives in Larchmont, New York and works as an administrator for a for a hospital surgical unit. “I’m doing fine, married and my daughter is now 13-year-old,” she said in the PEP article.

Here is a preview of one of the most famous scenes from Scorpio Nights. Daniel Fernando has sex with Anna Marie, who pretends to be sleeping:
